With ESPN since 1995, long-time NFL reporter John Clayton received news that he was the latest victim of layoffs from the sports leader. Its just the latest example of ESPN cutting its budget as a way to make up for sagging ratings and profits.

In confirming the news on Wednesday, the respected Clayton decided to make a joke in the process. And it was grand.

Clayton remains one of the most-respected reporters in the football world. ESPNs decision to lay him off was a shock to many who have followed the NFL over the past two-plus decades.

He joins a laundry list of strong talent to be given their walking papers by the cable television empire, including the likes of Chad Ford, Andy Katz and Ed Werder.
